Word, Tagline or Motto of the year is a guiding light
to help us stay on track & reach our goals.
It influences our actions & dictates what we
do for the rest of the year!
My WORD (rather words) for the year has been something I have been thinking about long and hard for a while now.
As I pondered more and more about My Highs and Lows of 2018 towards the end of last year, it became clear what my words (along with my goals) for 2019 (rather life) should be.
I mean, why does a word only mean something for a year and then it is long forgotten?
NOPE, when we learn and grow it is a change that takes place for a lifetime and it is not bound by a specific timeframe.
P.S: It doesn’t have to be just a word, but it could also be a tagline or a motto.
Right before I started writing this post, I went back to read my own post from a couple of years ago and below is an excerpt from that post…
‘So knowingly or unknowingly, with or without conscious effort, directly or indirectly, even at times when things did not work out the way I wanted them to, the universe sure seems to have conspired to make last year what I had originally intended it to be – a year of firsts! And hence my tagline for 2015.’
When your word is always at the back of your mind (which, of course, is a part of your goals) and when you feel strongly and passionately about something (again, those goals), I believe that the entire universe really conspires to make those deep-rooted desires become a reality (when combined with your hard work and efforts).
As I said in this post, I DO NOT make resolutions but SET GOALS,
and my WORD FOR THE YEAR –
1. Is that guiding light which will help me stay on track and reach my goals
2. It will dictate what I do and how I do them the rest of the year (and life)
3. It will influence my plan of actions, and my reactions to situations
So, if you haven’t thought about what your word should be, then go to this post, set your goals for the year first, and then deduce your word based on what you think will help you achieve those goals!
And as far as MY WORD FOR THE YEAR GOES, it is BED
(nope, it has nothing to do with getting more sleep, though that would be good).
It is rather 3 different words –
BALANCE . EVOLVE . DISCIPLINE
If you read my 2018 Year In Review, it will be all too clear to you that what is lacking the most in my life is BALANCE (that probably is the #1 cause of all my lows)!
I really need to give my all to bring about a sense of balance in my personal and professional life, even if that means scaling back on how many goals I want to achieve in a year (as I said here, it’s the biggest myth and lie that one can DO IT ALL).
With age, balance also becomes such a huge driving force behind being happy and content with what you have and where you are in life, and leading a healthy life, not just physically, but also mentally and emotionally.
I have always been a big proponent of the belief that change is the only constant, and a huge part of that school of thought is for one to EVOLVE (learn and grow) as a person every.single.day!!
The day I stop learning is the day I become obsolete. I have always said that I am my own competitor and I damn well need to make sure that I can say to myself ‘in your face last year you’ (thank you, Monica, (from Friends)).
I have this constant urge to beat my previous-self and become a better version of myself with each passing day.
After all, what is life if it is not a healthy competition, right? (and hence, I say New Year Better Me, not New Me, and not Same Old Me).
Last but surely not least, DISCIPLINE!!! I have all these big dreams, grand plans, and a huge list of goals (as I am sure so do you). But what is it that is truly stopping me from getting there?
Well, I know the answer to it, it is my lack of discipline – the biggest reason behind me not hitting 100% on all my goals.
When life happens, or when I get busy, or maybe it’s even just the weekend, then I stray off my path and down the drains go all my good habits. It could be as simple as doing suryanamaskara (sun salutations) or working out every.single.day, or being out there meeting people and networking.
They say it takes 21 days to build a habit and 90 days to build a lifestyle (I first heard this from my professor when I was in Engineering school, hats off to him, he was such a role model).
And if you ask me, these 3 words are also interconnected one way or another, they support each other, and without one, I can bet that the other two will soon be right out the window – BALANCE . EVOLVE . DISCIPLINE
There you have it, my words for the year!
I hope this post will help you in coming up with your own too.
